Agency (Punjab): Farmers in Punjab are gearing up to oppose BJP candidates in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, according to Harinder Singh Lakhowal, a leader of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM). Lakhowal announced plans to mobilize villagers to question and protest against BJP leaders using black flags, reflecting ongoing discontent with the party’s policies towards farmers.
This movement stems from previous conflicts, notably the farmers’ protests against the farm laws that were eventually repealed in 2021. The SKM has prepared an 11-point questionnaire focusing on issues such as the prevention of farmers’ marches to Delhi and the use of force against protesters.
BJP candidates like Hans Raj Hans in Faridkot and Taranjit Singh Sandhu in Amritsar, among others, have already encountered protests during their campaign events in Punjab. Lakhowal emphasized the goal of peaceful protest and informed discussion as villagers are encouraged to engage with campaigning BJP leaders directly.
In addition to expressing their grievances through direct action, the farmers have been vocal about their demands for a law ensuring a minimum support price for crops. The ongoing dissatisfaction has been highlighted by repeated protests at key border points between Punjab and Haryana.
With the Lok Sabha elections approaching on June 1 for Punjab’s 13 seats, the SKM and other farmer groups are intensifying their efforts to influence the political landscape and hold the BJP accountable for unmet demands. This movement underscores the significant role of agricultural communities in shaping regional and national politics in India.
