Agency(West Bengal): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has labeled the recent Calcutta High Court decision to invalidate over 25,000 school teacher jobs as a “gross injustice.” This declaration was made at an election rally in the Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency, amidst concerns over the operational capacity of schools without these teachers.
The court had earlier deemed the recruitment process for the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST), used to appoint teachers in state-sponsored and aided schools, as “null and void.” This ruling effectively cancels all appointments made through this process.
Banerjee suggested that the judgment was influenced by political motives, specifically by the BJP, to prevent these individuals from serving in poll duties. She speculated that this would allow the central government to deploy its employees, who would favor the saffron party. “It is a ploy by the BJP. I have respect for the judiciary but what has happened is gross injustice,” Banerjee stated at the rally.
Her comments reflect a deep-seated concern about the implications of this legal decision not only on education but also on the democratic processes in West Bengal. The controversy comes at a critical time as the state prepares for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, highlighting the intertwining of judicial actions and political strategies.
