Agency(Karnataka): Following recent discussions that suggested a strain in the relationship between the Janata Dal (Secular) [JD(S)] and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over seat allocation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, H.D. Kumaraswamy, a key leader of the JD(S), has come forward to clarify the situation. Despite expressing dissatisfaction initially regarding the seat-sharing arrangement, Kumaraswamy emphasized that this does not indicate a lack of trust or confusion within the alliance between the JD(S) and BJP. He remains optimistic that the issue concerning the allocation of the Kolar seat to the JD(S) will be resolved satisfactorily.
Kumaraswamy’s comments came after a meeting with JD(S) core committee members, where he highlighted concerns about communication gaps between the two parties but reassured that these issues do not undermine the foundation of trust and cooperation that exists between them. He noted that the JD(S) had requested three seats from the beginning, yet clarity on this matter has not been provided by the BJP. However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has consistently treated the JD(S)’s requests with respect, reinforcing the alliance’s strength.
The JD(S) officially became part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in September last year, marking a significant political alignment in Karnataka’s political landscape. This partnership envisages the JD(S) contesting from key constituencies like Mandya, Hassan, and potentially Kolar, with an understanding that promotes mutual respect and recognition of each party’s strengths. Notably, a prominent figure, Dr. C N Manjunath, related to former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, has been nominated by the BJP to contest from Bangalore Rural, signifying the collaborative spirit of the alliance.
Amid speculations and media reports suggesting a reluctance on the BJP’s part to relinquish the Kolar seat to JD(S), Kumaraswamy remains confident in his party’s prospects and the existing “atmosphere” of support for JD(S) candidates in the mentioned constituencies. His commitment to resolving these concerns is evident, as he plans to announce party candidates upon his return from medical treatment in Chennai.
Kumaraswamy also responded to criticisms from the state Congress leadership, specifically targeting comments made by D.K. Shivakumar. He accused the Congress of undermining the JD(S) during their coalition government and highlighted the stark contrast in treatment received from the BJP, which has fostered a more supportive and respectful partnership.
