Agency(New Delhi): Santiago Martin, known colloquially as India’s “lottery king” and presently under investigation for allegations of fraud and money laundering, has been identified alongside his enterprise, Future Gaming and Hotel Services, as the country’s foremost political benefactor. This revelation comes in light of an analysis of contributions made between 2019 and 2024, where his firm outpaced the second-highest donor by 40%, allocating a whopping 1368 Crore Indian rupees (approximately $165 million) in political donations. This analysis was possible thanks to the recent unveiling of data by the election commission, following a directive from the Supreme Court of India.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emerged as the principal beneficiary of these donations. However, specifics regarding the distribution of funds to individual parties remain undisclosed. The donations were part of an “electoral bonds” scheme, now deemed unconstitutional, which previously permitted anonymous and unrestricted financial contributions to political entities. Despite the controversy surrounding the scheme, there hasn’t been any implication that the contributions were illicit.
Martin’s journey from a lottery ticket vendor in his youth to a magnate with diverse interests from lotteries to real estate is a story of ambition. His flamboyant demeanor and extensive connections across political lines have been well documented, as have his generous gifts to political figures amidst his burgeoning business ventures.
Despite his business successes, Martin’s career has been marred by legal entanglements. Various law enforcement and investigative bodies have raided his business locations and confiscated properties due to ongoing legal issues. Last year, appeals to overturn property seizures by the Enforcement Directorate were rejected, and a court saw a prosecution complaint filed against Martin’s Future Gaming and several other associated firms.
The allegations against them include deceiving state governments over lottery sales proceeds, illegally claiming prizes on unsold tickets, and data tampering. Martin and his companies have consistently denied these accusations, asserting adherence to the law and highlighting Martin’s significant tax contributions in the past.
Martin’s rise from a laborer in Myanmar to a prominent businessman in India is a testament to his resilience. His lottery business, initiated in Coimbatore, quickly gained traction, enabling him to expand across India and into neighboring countries. Despite facing numerous legal challenges, including allegations of fraud and his brief incarceration, Martin has managed to remain a significant figure in India’s political and business landscapes.
