Agency(New Delhi): In a significant political move, the Congress party, through its leader Rahul Gandhi, has unveiled a series of ambitious guarantees aimed at empowering women in India, dubbed “Mahila Nyay.” Speaking at a women’s rally in Maharashtra’s Dhule district, Gandhi pledged transformative changes including a yearly financial support of Rs 1 lakh for poor women and ensuring 50% reservation in government jobs for women. These guarantees mark a cornerstone of the Congress’s campaign strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The “Mahila Nyay” guarantees comprise five key commitments: an annual deposit of Rs 1 lakh into the bank accounts of economically disadvantaged women, a promise of 50% reservation for women in government job vacancies, enhanced budget allocations for ASHA workers, and those employed in anganwadis and mid-day meal schemes. Additionally, Gandhi promised the establishment of Savitribai Phule hostels in every district to support women’s education and welfare. To further champion women’s rights, a nodal officer will be appointed to educate women about their rights and assist them in legal and societal battles.
The Congress’s proposals are set against the backdrop of Gandhi’s extensive “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,” where he traversed from Kanyakumari to Srinagar, interacting with thousands of citizens and absorbing their grievances, which he says stem from systemic injustice. Highlighting the disparities in loan waivers between industrialists and the common people, Gandhi stressed the need for inclusive governance that encompasses all communities in decision-making processes.
Echoing Gandhi’s commitments, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reinforced the party’s dedication to these guarantees, distinguishing them from mere electoral promises and emphasizing their commitment to immediate implementation upon election victory. Further elaborating on the legislative agenda, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh indicated the party’s readiness to amend the constitution to eliminate the 50% cap on reservations, aiming for a more equitable distribution of resources and representation across all sections of society.
These “Mahila Nyay” guarantees represent a strategic pivot by the Congress, aiming to address and rectify longstanding gender disparities in India. By promising substantial economic support, job reservations, and educational initiatives, the party seeks to galvanize female voters and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable society.
