Agency(New Delhi): In a strong political stance, Congress leaders in Dharwad have called upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) to prohibit BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde from participating in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This demand arises from Hegde’s controversial statements regarding altering certain aspects of the Indian Constitution, sparking significant uproar among Congress members, particularly from the Scheduled Castes wing.
During a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Dharwad, Congress activists vocally criticized Hegde and his party, accusing them of harboring intentions contrary to the constitutional ethos that governs India. The protesters emphasized the Constitution’s universal respect and its role as a beacon of governance worldwide, condemning any discourse aimed at undermining its sanctity.
The demonstrators argue that Hegde’s comments, which he often openly shares, reflect a broader sentiment within the BJP, suggesting a collective party inclination towards constitutional amendments that could jeopardize affirmative action policies, such as reservation, and secular principles. The Congress contingent contends that such rhetoric is indicative of the BJP’s alleged agenda to reshape India into a Hindu Rashtra, undermining the rights and protections afforded to SC/STs, OBCs, and minorities.
The outcry follows Hegde’s address at a rally in Siddapur, Uttara Kannada, where he suggested that the BJP aims to secure over 400 parliamentary seats—a two-thirds majority—necessary for constitutional amendments. Hegde criticized the insertion of terms like ‘secularism’ into the Constitution, which he claims contradicts Hindu interests, highlighting a deep-seated ideological clash.
Amid these allegations, Congress leaders, including KPCC members and local activists, have spearheaded the protest, drafting a memorandum to the government to articulate their grievances and demands. This move underscores a growing demand for electoral oversight to ensure that candidates and elected officials uphold the principles and integrity of the Indian Constitution.
