Agency(Tamil Nadu): In a bold move, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has declared that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), criticized for being divisive and unnecessary, will not find its place for implementation in the state. The assertion comes amidst concerns that the central government’s rush to notify the CAA rules, especially with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, undermines the Constitution’s fundamental principles.
CM Stalin criticized the central BJP government’s hurried actions, suggesting that the timing of the CAA’s implementation might be a strategic attempt to sidestep potential Supreme Court censure, divert public attention, and influence electoral outcomes. According to Stalin, the CAA serves no beneficial purpose and merely sows division among Indians, violating the nation’s commitment to unity, pluralism, and secularism.
Underlining the Tamil Nadu government’s stance, Stalin emphasized that the state would not facilitate the CAA’s enforcement, aligning with the broader opposition to any legislation that jeopardizes India’s unity. This position is consistent with the DMK’s historical advocacy for minority communities and Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, which led to the state assembly’s resolution on September 8, 2021, calling for the CAA’s repeal.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s statement adds to the chorus of dissent against the CAA, highlighting the act’s controversial nature and its perceived threat to India’s democratic and secular fabric. As the Centre moves forward with the CAA’s implementation, the opposition from states like Tamil Nadu poses significant questions about national unity and the central government’s legislative priorities in the face of widespread criticism.
