Agency (New Delhi): Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, during a recent speech, voiced concerns over ongoing attempts to modify the Indian Constitution, stressing the danger of a possible dictatorship in the nation. Kharge’s remarks came at the closure of the ‘Constitution and National Unity Convention -2024’.
Kharge highlighted the critical situation, stating, “Numerous individuals are endeavoring to modify or completely erase the Constitution. In the upcoming elections, it’s crucial for us to remain resolute and unified. If we fail, and the Constitution is compromised, a dictatorship in India will become a reality.” He emphasized the importance of choosing between autocracy and a just life.
“The survival of our Constitution is synonymous with the survival of India’s unity. A thriving democracy ensures prosperity for all. Unfortunately, the current central government neither upholds the Constitution nor operates with its principles in mind,” Kharge added, underscoring the essential nature of adhering to the Constitution.
He urged citizens to stay vigilant against manipulative tactics aimed at instilling a particular ideology. Kharge alleged a scheme to replace the current Constitution with a new one, questioning the integrity of such actions. “While Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks of safeguarding the Constitution, actions like using the Enforcement Directorate against opposition leaders and buying opposition MLAs in states like Karnataka, Manipur, and Goa raise questions about their constitutional validity,” he argued.
Kharge warned of an impending authoritarian rule if these tendencies persist. He critiqued Modi’s frequent personal assurances, saying, “When Modi says ‘my guarantee’ instead of the government’s or the BJP’s, it raises concerns. Guarantees aren’t personal; they’re borne by the citizens through their taxes. A leader constantly using ‘I’ is a step towards dictatorship.”
Kharge’s speech reflects growing concerns about the safeguarding of democratic values and the Constitution in India. His call for unity and vigilance is a direct appeal to the electorate to be conscious of the political narrative shaping the country’s future, especially with looming elections.
