The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) recently collaborated with the Knowledge and Awareness Mapping Platform (KAMP) to host a workshop on science communication. The event, part of the One Week One Lab program, welcomed over 50 teachers and equipped them with diverse tools for effective science communication.
During the event, C.B. Singh, Head of the Jigyasa, Training and HR Division at CSIR-NIScPR, opened the floor with a warm welcome. The keynote speaker, Prof. Sharmishtha Banerjee from the University of Hyderabad, urged science teachers to embrace an interdisciplinary approach. She emphasized, “All the subjects including biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics are inter-related and we have to tell this to our students in an effective manner.”
Ms. Arika Mathur, Head of Operations and Assessments at KAMP, caught the audience’s attention with a detailed presentation on KAMP. This platform aims to identify the unique skills and talents in students. Teachers attending the workshop were visibly excited about this initiative.
Hasan Jawaid Khan, Chief Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR and Editor of the ‘Science Reporter’ magazine, discussed the civic duty to combat “misinformation and fake news about science.” He stated, “It’s a responsibility of every citizen of the country to create more awareness about misinformation.”
Ms. Sonali Nagar, Associate Editor of Science Reporter magazine, presented to the teachers the fine points of Popular Science Writing. The workshop concluded with an assignment on this topic, handed out by Hasan Jawaid Khan.
CSIR-NIScPR is an institution under the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India. It is a key player in the realm of science communication and focuses on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) policy research. On the other hand, KAMP is an initiative that partners with industrial company M/S Nysa Communications Pvt. Ltd. (NCPL). Its aim is to develop creativity, meaningful learning, and critical thinking skills in students.
