New Delhi (Agency): The Odisha government is taking steps to ensure the safety of certified snake handlers by providing them with insurance coverage, according to statements made by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Pramila Mallik.
Under this initiative, the Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department will cover the insurance premium for certified snake handlers. In addition to insurance coverage, the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) will offer training to these handlers to enhance their skills and safety measures during rescue operations.
The decision has been met with positive feedback from organizations advocating for snake rescue and rehabilitation, such as Snake Helpline. The organization’s general secretary, Subhendu Mallik, expressed appreciation for the government’s step towards ensuring the well-being of both the snake handlers and the snakes they rescue.
The government’s focus on safety comes after issuing guidelines for the rescue of snakes from human habitations by certified snake handlers. The guidelines stipulate that only certified handlers are permitted to participate in rescue and release operations. Strict adherence to the prescribed protocols is required, as any deviations may result in penal actions under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The state of Odisha frequently witnesses incidents of snakebites, prompting the government to declare snakebites a state disaster in 2015. Snakebites account for a significant portion of disaster-related deaths in the state, with approximately 40% of total disaster-related fatalities attributed to them. Between 2015 and 2022, a total of 6,351 snakebite-related deaths were recorded in Odisha. Even in the current year, from January to July, 34 snakebite-related fatalities have been reported.
The government’s decision to provide insurance coverage to certified snake handlers is aimed at addressing the risks associated with their vital work and ensuring the well-being of both the handlers and the snakes they rescue.
