New Delhi (Agency): New Delhi has witnessed a breathtaking transformation in preparation for the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled from September 9 to 10. The city’s makeover is a fusion of aesthetics and environmental consciousness, creating a sense of pride and anticipation among its residents.
The city has been adorned with a mesmerizing array of water fountains, artificial waterfalls, and sculptures that vividly depict India’s cultural heritage and rich history. This transformation is not only about aesthetics; it also emphasizes ecological considerations. More than 3,000 mature trees have been strategically planted along key routes leading to Central Delhi, demonstrating the city’s commitment to green spaces. Over 100 fountains and seven lakh potted plants now adorn the city’s streets, creating a green oasis along major routes connecting the New Delhi International Airport to Central and South Delhi.
The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) has also embraced the transformation. Terminal 3 now features illuminated G20 summit logos, both inside and outside the terminal. Standees and cutouts conveying information about the summit are strategically placed to provide insights to passengers. The MATV system within the terminal showcases messages related to the summit. Artistic designer fountains, sculptures, and decorative flowerpots have been installed along adjacent roads to enhance the airport’s surroundings and create a welcoming ambiance.
To address the issue of monkeys roaming freely across the city, Delhi’s authorities have implemented innovative measures. Langur mimics and cut-outs have been strategically placed to deter monkeys from causing inconvenience and harm.
Delhi’s iconic landmarks have also been transformed, with graffiti featuring historical figures now adorning railway bridges. Statues, including a stone-carved lion near the Prime Minister’s residence and those displayed near the Indira Gandhi International Airport, add to the city’s rejuvenated appearance.
Public spaces have not been overlooked in this makeover. Over 100 sculptures and 150 fountains, each with unique designs, have been installed to give Delhi a modern and picturesque look. The Delhi Metro has developed a pedestrian plaza outside the Supreme Court metro station, offering a serene space for visitors and commuters.
Thematic posters featuring the G20 logo and showcasing various aspects of Indian culture are displayed around the India Gate Circle. This effort aims to highlight India’s rich cultural heritage, from lively ‘bhangra’ dance to the grandeur of Durga Puja celebrations.
The G20 Leaders’ Summit is set to take place at the newly constructed international convention and exhibition center, Bharat Mandapam, at Pragati Maidan. However, amidst the city’s grand transformation, controversy has arisen over the installation of Shivling-shaped fountains at Dhaula Kuan. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused Delhi Minister Atishi of disrespecting the ‘Shivling’ for decorative purposes, sparking a debate over the beautification work’s responsibilities and funding sources.
As New Delhi readies itself for the global stage, its remarkable transformation reflects its commitment to showcasing India’s cultural heritage and hosting a visually captivating G20 Leaders’ Summit.
