New Delhi (Agency): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar stressed the vital role of India’s maritime strength in ensuring economic growth and global ascendancy. He highlighted the necessity for a modernized Navy to safeguard maritime interests, particularly in the face of current geopolitical challenges in the Indian Ocean region. Dhankhar recognized India as a net security provider in the Indo-Pacific region and described the country as a significant global player that aims to secure a peaceful, rule-based maritime regime in the midst of ongoing challenges.
Speaking at the launch event of the warship ‘Mahendragiri’ in Mumbai, the Vice President praised the progress India has made in building a self-reliant naval force. He applauded the Navy’s commitment to Atma-Nibhartha (self-reliance) and acknowledged the role of micro, small, and medium enterprises in the construction of the warship. A significant portion of equipment and systems for the Nilgiri-class stealth frigates, to which Mahendragiri belongs, was sourced from indigenous firms.
Dhankhar highlighted India’s historical connection to maritime activities, citing that over 90% of the country’s trade by volume and more than 68% by value moves through maritime routes. He expressed confidence that by 2047, India will emerge as a global leader and stabilizing force. The Vice President praised the inclusion of women in defense forces and noted their increasing roles and responsibilities.
Addressing challenges in the Indian Ocean Region, such as piracy, narcotics smuggling, human trafficking, illegal migration, and natural disasters, Dhankhar commended the Indian Navy’s courage, competence, and commitment. He emphasized the Navy’s role as a true force multiplier, cooperating with partners to ensure economic growth and security through initiatives like SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
The Vice President highlighted the role of India Navy in disaster relief efforts, describing it as a vehicle of peace and goodwill during crises. He referred to INS Vikrant, India’s indigenous aircraft carrier, as a symbol of the nation’s potential and ambitions.
Dhankhar acknowledged India’s increasing indigenous defense production and stressed the quintessential importance of maritime strength for economic and strategic growth. He praised government initiatives like Innovations for Defence Excellence (i-DEX) and the Directorate of Indigenisation.
Drawing a parallel to the Chandrayaan-3 moon mission’s success, where the Indian flag is imprinted, the Vice President expressed hope that Mahendragiri would serve as an ambassador of India’s maritime might once commissioned.
Dignitaries including the Governor of Maharashtra, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Chief of Naval Staff, and others were present at the event.
