New Delhi (Agency): The DMK is gearing up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by focusing on restructuring and refining its grassroots setup. M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and President of the DMK, has urged party members to aim for all 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and the one seat in Puducherry.
To achieve this goal, the party is planning to increase the number of its district units from 72 to 117. This change aims to ensure that a district leader oversees each panchayat-level committee, thereby facilitating better feedback from the grassroots. A uniform structure is also in the works to divide responsibilities evenly among committees, each handling two assembly constituencies.
Insiders in the DMK expressed concerns about the anti-incumbency factor affecting the party. The DMK has been in power in Tamil Nadu since 2021. In some areas, local issues could negatively impact the party’s performance in the 2024 elections. To address this, district-level leaders will be held accountable for the electoral success of the party in their respective areas. These leaders will submit weekly reports to the state leader in charge of their district.
It’s worth noting that the DMK is a cadre-based political party promoting Dravidian ideology. This structure makes it easier to extract maximum effort from party members at the grassroots level. Furthermore, ministers from the party are also responsible for each district. These ministers and the state leaders in charge will submit weekly performance reports to the Chief Minister and other senior leaders for review.
This extensive restructuring effort comes at a critical time for the DMK. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are not far off, and the party is eager to maintain its power in Tamil Nadu while expanding its influence at the national level.
