New Delhi (Agency): On Thursday, ruling AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) MLAs demanded an inquiry against BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) MLA Vijender Gupta by the Privileges Committee. The allegation centers on Gupta’s supposed distortion of facts from the Petitions Committee report presented in the Delhi Assembly, as well as his disruption of House proceedings.
AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha was among those who called for the inquiry, demanding that Gupta be suspended from the House until the matter is investigated by the Privileges Committee. Jha’s fellow legislator, Madan Lal, expressed agreement, stating, “He does not deserve to be here.”
The issue escalated throughout the day, with Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla accusing Gupta of disrupting the House since the morning session. This led to a verbal clash between the BJP MLAs and Birla.
BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht accused the AAP MLAs of suppressing the voice of the opposition, protesting the way the report was tabled in the Assembly. He said, “Our voice is being throttled. But you cannot suppress our voice. I respect the Chair.”
Birla responded by alleging that the opposition members were attempting to disrupt the proceedings through Gupta. She strongly condemned the act, saying, “It is condemnable and shameful that facts were distorted from the report presented in the Delhi Assembly. The opposition members do not want to discuss issues of public welfare.”
She further warned Gupta, stating, “Gupta is deliberately trying to disrupt the House proceedings. It’s also a matter of contempt the way he presented the facts of the petitions committee report in a twisted manner. If you repeat it, I will be forced to take action on the proposal of AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha.” Birla also cautioned the opposition members to “mind their behaviour.”
The situation continued to escalate as Sanjeev Jha accused Gupta of regularly disrupting the House and urged the Speaker to take the consent of the House on his proposal. Following Jha’s address, the BJP MLAs got up in protest, leading Birla to retort, “Is Comedy Nights going on here? Why are you laughing?”
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between the ruling AAP and the opposition BJP within the Delhi Assembly. It also raises questions about the proper conduct of elected officials in the legislative body.
The demand for an inquiry against Gupta and the subsequent exchange of words between the two parties illustrates the challenges of political discourse and cooperation within the Assembly. The allegations of distortion and disruption are serious and may have significant consequences if proven true.
As of now, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and whether the Privileges Committee will proceed with the inquiry. Both the ruling party and the opposition will likely continue to scrutinize each other’s actions closely, potentially leading to further confrontations in the future. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining decorum and integrity in the legislative process.
