New Delhi (Agency): Home Minister Amit Shah voiced his concerns regarding the opposition alliance during a session in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament. He questioned their integrity, citing alleged corrupt practices they employed to maintain their governments during previous no-confidence motions.
Amit Shah brought up an incident from 1999. He recalled that when the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was faced with a no-confidence motion, he took the honorable route. Shah said, “he chose to step down instead of indulging in corruption to save his government.” Using this as a reference, he highlighted how political parties reveal their true nature during challenging times. Shah emphasized, “The character of political parties and alliances is revealed in such times of crises.”
Drawing attention to the opposition, specifically the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Shah said that their way was to “indulge in corruption to save the government by hook or by crook.” He contrasted this with the character of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which he says upholds principles.
Further, he mentioned another historical event from 1993. P V Narasimha Rao, the then prime minister, also faced a no-confidence motion. Shah stated that Rao chose to “remain in power by hook or by crook.” Shah continued, explaining that while Rao won the trust vote, members of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) were later imprisoned. “Narasimha Rao also went to jail… today, the Congress and the JMM are sitting in the opposition in the Lok Sabha,” he said.
Another instance he brought up was from 2008. “In 2008, Manmohan (Singh) ji brought the confidence motion, this House saw its most disgraceful moments when MPs were bribed in crores of rupees and the government was saved,” Shah said. He emphasized this to highlight what he believes to be the true “character of the UPA.”
However, Shah expressed confidence in the current government. He mentioned that despite the opposition parties lacking trust in the government, the nation’s people feel differently. He proudly stated that the nation holds immense trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was elected with a full majority not once, but twice. “After 30 years, people elected a full majority government,” he added.
Amit Shah also commented on the current no-confidence motion, suggesting that it was introduced in the House merely to sow seeds of confusion. He spoke about the Quit India movement’s anniversary, mentioning that the Prime Minister has given a clear message: “Corruption Quit India, Dynasty Quit India and Appeasement Quit India.” Shah concluded by saying, “Modi has ushered in a new era of politics since 2014, that of development which will lead to the creation of India of the dreams of our freedom fighters much before 2047.”
