New Delhi (Agency): Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, took a significant step on Tuesday in the state assembly. He introduced a resolution opposing the plan of India’s central government, led by the BJP, to enforce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the country.
After the Chief Minister’s initiative, the opposing party, the Congress-led UDF, responded by offering several changes to the resolution. However, they expressed their approval for the Left government’s action against the UCC.
Chief Minister Vijayan communicated his deep concern about the central government’s move. He described the action to bring the UCC as “unilateral and hasty”. He emphasized the worry of the Kerala Legislative Assembly about this decision.
The background to this decision reveals a joint campaign against the UCC, not just by Kerala’s ruling Left government but also by the opposition UDF. Several religious groups in Kerala have also voiced their concerns against the UCC.
Both political groups, the ruling Left and the UDF, recently held separate events in the city of Kozhikode to discuss their positions against the UCC. In these gatherings, various religious representatives took part, illustrating the broad range of concern against the UCC within Kerala.
Furthermore, the Law Commission of India, an advisory body for legal reform, sought opinions from the public last month. They wanted to understand people’s suggestions about the introduction of the UCC in India.
