New Delhi (Agency): Nearly two weeks after the passing of former Congress Chief Minister and incumbent MLA Oommen Chandy, his final resting place remains a focal point, drawing massive crowds. His last journey, a 38-hour, 158 km procession, continues to dominate discussions across various settings, from barber shops to tea stalls and social gatherings.
Chandy’s tomb at the renowned St George Orthodox Church in his hometown Puthuppally, Kottayam district, witnesses around 5,000 visitors daily, spanning diverse religious and political affiliations. Many pay their respects with tearful eyes, adorning the grave with fresh flowers, and candles have been continuously lit since July 20.
Among those who came to pay their last respects were leading travel tour operator Chandrahasan and his wife Jaya, the daughter of late Congress Union Minister and Governor M.M. Jacob.
Chandrahasan expressed that Chandy’s memory would endure, not just among those who knew him personally, but also among the masses who watched the extraordinary farewell over three days through live broadcasts.
The Church’s vicar, Rev Fr Varghese Varghese, revealed that around 5,000 people pay their respects daily. After the 40th day, the Church Committee plans to convene a special meeting to decide on a memorial for the departed leader.
Efforts are underway to create a documentary film, “Puthupally Muthal Puthupally Vare,” showcasing Chandy’s monumental farewell journey from the international airport in the state capital to the Church. A QR code at the tomb will soon enable visitors to watch the updated version of the documentary film.
Social media platforms buzz with tales of Chandy’s compassionate nature, immortalizing him as a legendary figure.
The enduring remembrance and reverence for Oommen Chandy at his final resting place reflect the indelible mark he left on the hearts of people, transcending political boundaries and touching the lives of countless individuals with his compassion and humanity.
