New Delhi, January 14: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said India has emerged as a strong and developed nation, asserting that the country now commands global attention on international platforms.
Addressing the 10th Armed Forces Veterans’ Day at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, Singh said that while India was earlier not taken seriously globally, “today, when India speaks, the world listens.” He called on veterans to continue guiding the nation and stressed the need to promote social harmony.
Highlighting the contribution of ex-servicemen, Singh said veterans are playing a vital role across sectors such as education, agriculture and disaster management, describing them as important pillars of the nation. “Just as families take important decisions after consulting elders, the role of veterans is equally significant for the country,” he said, adding that the government has launched several initiatives for their welfare.
The Defence Minister also paid tribute to soldiers who served in Sri Lanka during Operation Pawan, remembering those who laid down their lives as part of the Indian Peacekeeping Force. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited their memorial during his Sri Lanka visit in 2015 and that their sacrifices continue to be honoured at the National War Memorial in Delhi.
Referring to welfare measures, Singh said the implementation of the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme had ensured financial stability for veterans. “OROP is not a favour but a matter of justice,” he said.
Singh underscored that respect for soldiers is deeply rooted in Indian tradition, noting that monuments like the National War Memorial remind citizens of the sacrifices behind the nation’s peace and security. He urged the youth, including Agniveers, to learn from veterans and seek their guidance, especially in supporting civil administration during times of need.
Armed Forces Veterans’ Day is observed annually on January 14 to mark the birth anniversary of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, India’s first Commander-in-Chief of the Army, who retired on this day in 1953. A towering figure in Indian military history, Cariappa led the forces during the 1947 war and laid the foundation of discipline, service and patriotism in the Indian Army.
