Review Overview

Mumbai (Maharashtra): England all-rounder Will Jacks has labelled India as the “team to beat” in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, while expressing confidence ahead of England’s tournament opener against Nepal at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Jacks said England have shown steady improvement over the past year under the leadership of captain Harry Brook. He added that recent ODI and T20I series victories against Sri Lanka have boosted the team’s confidence heading into the 20-team World Cup.

“I think we’ve been performing well over the last 12 months since Harry became captain. There’s been a clear progression. What we achieved in Sri Lanka recently was another stepping stone, and we come into this tournament full of confidence and belief,” Jacks said, as quoted by the ICC.

However, the England all-rounder acknowledged the strength of the competition and singled out co-hosts India as favourites. “There are amazing teams in this World Cup, so nothing is guaranteed. Playing at home, India are the favourites, and I think everyone knows they’re the team to beat,” he added.

England have been placed in Group C alongside West Indies, Italy, Nepal, and Scotland. Emphasising the importance of a strong start, Jacks said every match in the tournament is crucial. He also praised the growth of Nepalese cricket and welcomed the expansion of the World Cup to 20 teams.

“The first game is hugely important, and every game matters. You don’t get many chances to make mistakes. Nepalese cricket has grown a lot in recent years, and having 20 teams in the World Cup is a really positive step for the game,” he said.

Jacks, who represented Mumbai Indians during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, said his experience of playing in India, particularly at the Wankhede Stadium, has helped him feel at ease.

“The IPL is a brilliant experience. Coming back to India, and especially to this ground, I feel very comfortable now. Having played here before, I can focus more on my game and the opposition rather than adjusting to new conditions,” he said.

England have already announced their playing XI for the match against Nepal.

England Playing XI vs Nepal:
Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (wk), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Harry Brook (c), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood.
