New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday paid heartfelt tributes to the heroes of the 1971 India-Pakistan War on the occasion of the 54th Vijay Diwas, remembering their courage, sacrifice and unwavering dedication to the nation. The historic war marked a decisive victory for India and led to the liberation of Bangladesh.

Recalling the valour and patriotism of the Indian Armed Forces, the President bowed to the supreme sacrifice of soldiers who laid down their lives for the country. She expressed deep gratitude to the forces for safeguarding India’s sovereignty and honour.

In a post on X, President Murmu wrote, “On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, I pay my humble respects to the brave sons of Mother India. Their courage, valour and unparalleled devotion to the motherland have always filled the nation with pride. Their heroism and patriotism will continue to inspire the people of the country.”

She described Vijay Diwas as a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the Indian Armed Forces and a reminder of one of the most significant chapters in India’s military history, noting that the sacrifices of the 1971 war heroes would forever remain etched in the nation’s collective memory.

The President also recalled the courage displayed by the Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor, India’s response following the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. She highlighted the professionalism, preparedness and determination of the forces in countering terrorism and protecting national security.

Emphasising vigilance, self-reliance and the use of advanced warfare techniques, she said the Army’s “Empowerment through Indigenisation” initiative reflects its readiness to face future challenges. “In Operation Sindoor, the Army demonstrated self-reliance, strategic resolve and effective use of modern warfare techniques, which inspire the entire nation,” she said, extending her best wishes to soldiers and their families.

Vijay Diwas is observed every year on December 16 to commemorate India’s historic victory in the 1971 war, which resulted in the surrender of Pakistani forces and the creation of Bangladesh. The day stands as a tribute to the bravery, discipline and strategic excellence of the Indian Armed Forces.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to the soldiers of the 1971 war. In a post on X, he wrote, “On Vijay Diwas, we remember the brave soldiers whose courage and sacrifice ensured India’s historic victory in 1971. Their selfless service protected our nation and continues to inspire generations.”

Across the country, Vijay Diwas was marked with commemorative events. The Indian Army’s Eastern Command organised a Military Tattoo in Kolkata, showcasing military traditions, discipline and ceremonial drills.

The Indian Army also shared the historic account of Bangladesh’s liberation on social media, stating that Vijay Diwas symbolises the decisive victory of the 1971 war. It highlighted how the Indian Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini fought shoulder-to-shoulder, leading to the birth of a new nation. The Army noted that in just 13 days, nearly 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered—one of the largest military surrenders in world history.
