Ballia (Uttar Pradesh): A suspected cow smuggler was injured in a police encounter early Wednesday in Ballia’s Sikanderpur area. Police had set up checkpoints to curb illegal cattle transportation when a motorcyclist attempted to evade a barricade.
According to ASP Ballia Dinesh Chand Shukla, the suspect’s motorcycle skidded as police tried to stop him, causing him to fall. “He then tried to fire at the police team with the intent to kill. Police retaliated in self-defence, and he sustained a gunshot injury to his right leg,” Shukla said.
The injured man identified himself as Brijesh, son of Dharmdev Prasad, from Mohammadpur in Mau district. He reportedly confessed that he and his aide were involved in smuggling cows into Bihar for slaughter. Police recovered a .315 bore rifle, live cartridges, and a Splendour motorcycle from the spot. Brijesh was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and subsequently arrested.
Murder Accused Arrested After Shootout in Bulandshahr
In a separate incident in Bulandshahr on Thursday, police arrested a man named Salim following an exchange of gunfire. Salim, accused of kidnapping and murdering a woman from another community, attempted to escape and opened fire on police. He was injured in retaliatory firing and apprehended.
Officials said the woman’s family had filed a missing persons complaint on November 28. Her body was found on Monday in the Walipura canal in the Kotwali Nagar area, prompting police to register a case against Salim. After the encounter, he was taken to a hospital for treatment, and the murder weapon was recovered.
Further investigations in both cases are underway.
