Washington: In a notable shift from his previous statements, former U.S. President Trump on Thursday said he had stopped “three wars,” revising his long-held claim that he had prevented “seven wars” during his presidency.
Speaking at a high-profile dinner with top technology CEOs at the White House, Trump did not specify which conflicts he was referring to, but described them as long-standing.
“You know, I settled three wars. One was going on for 31 years—10 million people killed. Another for 34 years, and another for 37 years,” he said.
Trump made the comments in response to a question about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. He suggested that, despite doubts at the time, he had successfully resolved other major conflicts and expressed confidence that he could help bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
“People said, ‘You can’t settle them.’ And I settled them. This one turned out to be more difficult, but we’ll get it. We’re gonna get it settled,” he said.
In the past, Trump had often claimed credit for de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly during the 2019 military standoff following Operation Sindoor. On August 26, he reiterated that his intervention helped prevent what he described as a near-nuclear conflict, asserting that seven fighter jets were shot down during the crisis—a number he had previously stated as five.
“The war with India and Pakistan was the next level—it was going to be a nuclear war,” Trump said during a meeting with the President of South Korea. “I said, ‘You want to trade? We’re not doing any trade with you. You’ve got 24 hours to settle it.’ They said, ‘Well, there’s no more war going on.’ I used trade and whatever I had to use.”
Trump did not name the three conflicts he now claims to have resolved, and the specifics remain unclear.
