Review Overview

The Aryavarth Express Jammu/Ladakh, February 4:
Tourism in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir continued its upward trajectory in 2025, recording a total of 1.78 crore tourist visits throughout the year, government officials said. The figures reflect sustained interest in the region’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and adventure offerings despite facing challenges related to security incidents and natural calamities.

Releasing the tourism data during the ongoing legislative assembly budget session, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha described tourism as a “vital pillar” of the Union Territory’s economy. He said the robust footfall underscores the region’s growing appeal to both domestic and national travelers, and highlighted efforts to boost infrastructure, connectivity, and visitor experiences across Jammu & Kashmir.

Officials noted that the strong performance comes even as the region navigated hurdles such as security-related events and occasional natural disruptions during the year. Nonetheless, enhanced accessibility — including improved roads and expanded transport links — coupled with focused promotional and development strategies helped drive tourist interest in a range of destinations.

To further strengthen the sector, the administration has accorded industry status to tourism, a move aimed at attracting long-term investment and generating employment opportunities. This policy shift is expected to encourage private sector participation and innovation in services linked to travel and hospitality.

New attractions inaugurated in 2025 have also contributed to diversifying the region’s tourism offerings. Among these is Bagh-e-Gul-e Dawood, the first chrysanthemum garden in Kashmir, featuring over 50 varieties of flowers. The garden — launched in October — aims to draw visitors during the autumn season, complementing the famous spring bloom at the Valley’s tulip gardens.

Traditional activities remain strong draws as well. In popular hill resort Gulmarg, for example, the iconic winter sledge rides continue to attract adventure seekers and families alike, while supporting local livelihoods. Local guides and operators say that tourism remains a key source of income for many residents.

The tourism sector’s performance is also being viewed as a barometer of confidence in Jammu & Kashmir ’s overall development path. With continued focus on sustainable growth, regional stakeholders remain optimistic that the region will sustain its appeal as an all-season destination, while generating broad-based economic benefits for communities across both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions.
