Sivaganga (Tamil Nadu): The postmortem of three women who died in the tragic bus collision near Tiruppattur in Sivagangai district has been completed, officials confirmed on Monday. State ministers S. Sivasankar and KR Periya Karuppan handed over ₹3 lakh each as relief assistance to the families of the deceased.
The ministers also visited the injured being treated at Sivagangai Government Medical College Hospital and paid their respects to the deceased by garlanding their bodies.
According to an official statement, “Post-mortem examinations were conducted on the bodies of the three women who died in the accident, and the bodies were handed over to their families overnight. The State Government’s relief assistance of ₹3 lakh each was also issued as cheques.”
The deceased women were identified as Deivanai, Chellam, and Gunalakshmi, the district Public Relations Office said.
The accident occurred around 5 pm on Sunday when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus travelling from Kangeyam to Karaikudi collided head-on with another government bus en route from Karaikudi to Dindigul. Eleven people have been confirmed dead, while more than 20 others were injured.
The injured were rushed to hospitals in Karaikudi, Tiruppattur, and Sivagangai. Police personnel and Fire and Rescue Services responded promptly, with senior district officers, including the Superintendent of Police and Deputy Superintendent of Police, reaching the scene to oversee rescue efforts.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin earlier expressed anguish over the loss of lives and directed immediate relief measures. He deputed the Sivaganga District Collector and Minister KR Periya Karuppan to the accident site to ensure proper medical support for survivors. The CM announced ₹3 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased, ₹1 lakh for those seriously injured, and ₹50,000 for those with minor injuries.
President Droupadi Murmu also condoled the deaths, posting on X, “The news of the loss of lives in a tragic accident in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, is very sad. I extend my deep condolences to bereaved families and pray for the swift recovery of those injured.”
