Tiruvannamalai (Tamil Nadu): With thousands of devotees expected for the grand Maha Deepam on December 3, Tiruvannamalai district authorities have rolled out an extensive security and traffic management plan to ensure a safe and seamless experience during the ongoing Karthigai Deepam festival, which runs from November 24 to December 7.
More than 15,000 police personnel will be deployed across the temple town, backed by 24 watch towers and strict checking at all key entry points leading to the famous Arunachaleswarar Temple. Only vehicles with valid permits will be allowed into restricted areas.
On Maha Deepam day, private vehicle entry will be heavily restricted, prompting major traffic diversions. Devotees will be directed toward designated parking areas and temporary bus terminals set up along the town’s periphery.
To strengthen surveillance, authorities have installed 1,060 CCTV cameras, including 303 inside the temple complex. They have also identified 26 sensitive locations that will receive additional patrols, heightened monitoring, and watch tower oversight.
The district administration has created 24 temporary bus termini with a total capacity of 2,325 buses. A staggering 4,764 special buses, operating 11,293 trips, will run from various districts—especially on December 3 and 4—to manage the anticipated surge in devotees.
Since two-wheelers and private cars are banned inside the town on Maha Deepam day, the Transport Department will run 180 shuttle services linking temporary bus stands to the Girivalam path and the temple. Tickets are priced at ₹10 per person.
Several regular bus routes have been diverted to ensure smooth movement for emergency vehicles and festival operations.
Authorities have urged devotees to follow the guidelines and make use of the special transport arrangements for a safe, organised, and spiritually fulfilling Maha Deepam celebration.
