New Delhi: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday underscored the need for accelerated development in Delhi, calling for the fulfillment of long-standing promises in the national capital. Speaking to the media, Puri highlighted the achievements of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government over the past 11 years and emphasized the urgency of translating those successes into tangible improvements for Delhi.
“With Prime Minister Modi’s 11 years of governance and the support of local bodies, we have no excuses left,” Puri said. “We must now deliver on the promises of development and ensure that Delhi gets what it rightfully deserves.”
Puri noted the doubling of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, stating that the economy has grown from $2 trillion in 2014 to $4 trillion today.
Highlighting the impact of what he called a “triple-engine government”—referring to BJP-led administrations at the Centre, in Delhi, and within the Municipal Corporation of Delhi—Puri pointed to coordinated governance as a catalyst for change.
Reflecting on Delhi’s transformation over the decades, the minister shared personal recollections of the city’s growth. “I’ve witnessed Delhi’s evolution since the days just after partition, when the population was about 11–12 lakh. “With successive waves of migration, it has now crossed 2 crore,” he said.
In a related address on June 14, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal spoke in Dibrugarh as part of events marking the NDA government’s 11th anniversary. Sonowal credited the Modi administration’s “decisive and corruption-free governance” for what he described as an “unstoppable surge” in India’s development trajectory.
“India has overcome an era of policy paralysis and dynastic politics,” he said, asserting that the nation is now driven by youth-led innovation, welfare-based growth, and rapid infrastructure development.
Sonowal also highlighted the government’s poverty alleviation efforts, stating that over 25 crore Indians have moved above the poverty line in the past decade—more than the population of many European nations.
Pointing to the rise of India‘s startup ecosystem, the minister said the number of startups has grown from 30,000 in 2014 to over 1 lakh today, with over 1.7 crore youth actively engaged in entrepreneurial ventures.
“India is firmly on track to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2029,” Sonowal said. “This is the Modi guarantee—delivery with speed, scale, and honesty. We are laying the foundation for a ‘Viksit Bharat’—a developed, self-reliant India.”
