Agency(New Delhi): The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Center of Excellence (TCOE) launched the first of their outreach programs for the transformative ‘Sangam: Digital Twin’ initiative at IIT Delhi. This groundbreaking event aims to revolutionize infrastructure planning and management by leveraging digital twin technology. Themed “Bridging the gap between Innovation and Planning,” the initiative attracted industry leaders, startups, innovators, and academia to explore how digital twins can modernize infrastructure and promote innovation, collective action, and collaboration.

Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of Telecom, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, inaugurated the event, highlighting the critical role of digital twins in infrastructure development. Digital twins, which replicate physical assets digitally, gather real-time data, and model process behaviors, are seen as pivotal for operational efficiency, informed decision-making, and cost savings in infrastructure projects. The initiative emphasizes the importance of breaking down data silos and integrating data across departments and sectors, utilizing AI and large language models for enhanced planning and decision-making.

The outreach program, designed to spark interest and engagement among potential participants, featured a lineup of speakers from various industries, encouraging networking, collaboration, and inspiration. The day’s discussions ranged from the integration of real-time data and digital precision in urban planning and management to innovative approaches involving Building Information Modeling (BIM) and advanced visualization technologies like AR/VR.

Key themes explored included transitioning from the physical to a real-time intelligent virtual world, dynamic data integration, and the future shaped by digital twins and advanced technologies. Participants also discussed global perspectives, with insights from international experts on the successful application of digital twin technology.

This initiative marks a significant shift in infrastructure management, aiming for smarter, more resilient cities. With additional outreach programs scheduled at IIIT Bangalore and IIIT Hyderabad, the ‘Sangam: Digital Twin’ initiative is set to drive forward India’s digital transformation in infrastructure planning and management, underlining the DoT’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development.
