Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls Likely in Single Phase: CEC Gyanesh Kumar

The Aryavarth Express Chennai: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Friday indicated that the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are likely to be held in a single phase, following consultations with political parties.

Addressing a press conference in Chennai after a review meeting conducted by the Election Commission of India, Kumar said most political stakeholders favoured a single-phase poll. He added that the Commission would take a final decision after due consideration.

The meeting focused on poll preparedness across the state, with district collectors and senior police officials briefing the Commission on logistics, security, and enforcement arrangements. Kumar also felicitated first-time voters and described elections as a “festival of democracy,” urging greater youth participation.

Highlighting digital initiatives, the CEC said candidates can file nominations online through the ECI portal, though physical submission before the Returning Officer remains mandatory under law within the stipulated timeframe.

Appealing to voters aged 18 to 30, Kumar urged the media to raise awareness and encourage participation. Drawing parallels with Bihar’s high turnout, he expressed confidence that Tamil Nadu would record strong polling numbers.

Clarifying legal provisions, he stated that an Aadhaar card is not proof of domicile or citizenship under Section 9 of the Aadhaar Act, but only proof of identity. Voter eligibility, he noted, is governed by Article 326 of the Constitution, requiring the elector to be above 18 years of age, an ordinary resident of the polling area, and a citizen of India.

On curbing money power, Kumar warned against carrying cash beyond permissible limits and highlighted the simplified Form 8 process for updating voter details, including name changes after marriage.

Expressing confidence in the state’s preparedness, he said Tamil Nadu’s election machinery aims to set new benchmarks in conducting smooth and transparent polls.
