New Delhi: Suspended BJP functionary Nupur Sharma met with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday in the national capital. The meeting made headlines as CM Gupta was seen holding Sharma and chanting “Jai Shere Ram” (Hail Lord Ram).
Nupur Sharma was suspended in June 2022 from her role as BJP spokesperson following controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammed made during a television debate. Her comments triggered widespread protests and condemnation from several Islamic nations, including Iran and Qatar. Amid the fallout, the Supreme Court granted Sharma protection from arrest in multiple FIRs filed across the country.
In a separate development on Saturday, CM Gupta appealed to the public to refrain from throwing food, particularly roti (Indian flatbread), on roads. She recounted an incident she witnessed while travelling in Delhi, where a man tossed bread from his car—apparently to feed a cow. Gupta intervened, stressing that such actions endanger both animals and road users.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she highlighted the cultural and spiritual significance of roti and emphasised that disrespecting food by discarding it on the road is unacceptable.
“Roti is not just food; it is a symbol of our culture, faith, and respect.” Throwing it on the road endangers both animals and people,” she wrote. If you wish to feed animals, please do so at gaushalas or designated places. This reflects our values, sensitivity, and responsibility.”
The Chief Minister called on Delhi residents to adopt safer and more respectful practices when feeding animals, encouraging them to uphold cultural values while ensuring road safety.
“I appeal to all Delhiites: do not throw roti or any food on the road. Feed animals lovingly but responsibly”. Respect your culture and keep your roads safe. #RoadSafety,” she added.
Earlier in the day, CM Gupta also extended greetings on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti. She offered prayers at Sankat Mochan Dham, Siddh Hanuman Mandir in Karol Bagh to mark the auspicious day.
