New Delhi (Agency): The opposition party AIADMK in Tamil Nadu has urgently called on the Chief Minister M K Stalin to speak with his counterparts in Karnataka and obtain 86.380 TMC of Cauvery water that is owed to the state.

AIADMK’s general secretary K Palaniswami expressed grave concern over the situation, stating that the Congress government is creating problems for Tamil Nadu’s farmers. He insisted that the Chief Minister should meet with Karnataka’s Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to get the water.

Palaniswami emphasized, ”Currently, the reservoirs in Karnataka have a storage of about 80 percent. Stalin should visit Bengaluru and hold talks with Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, who are part of his alliance, and obtain 86.360 TMC water due for June, July and this August and save the Kuruvai paddy crop raised on 3.5 lakh acres which is on the verge of wilting.”

The Cauvery water issue is not new, but it resurfaced when the Congress party came to power in Karnataka, which is an ally of DMK, the ruling party in Tamil Nadu. Palaniswami proudly recounted how the AIADMK had safeguarded the state’s interests in the past, including during the times of Chief Ministers M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.

The AIADMK leader also criticized the DMK government’s decision to seek help from the Central government. He questioned Stalin’s actions by saying, ”But, he is writing letters on this issue. What’s the mystery behind his letters to the Prime Minister and Central Ministers? Is he prostrating before them?”

He strongly believed that it was wrong for Stalin to write to the Central government rather than assert Tamil Nadu’s rights. He pointed out that Karnataka is obliged to follow the Supreme Court order to release the water to Tamil Nadu.

Palaniswami added, ”It is also the duty and responsibility of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to rebuke his ally and ensure it released the water.”

There is more at stake as well. Media reports indicate that Karnataka’s Deputy CM ordered a survey for constructing the Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery river. The AIADMK general secretary has called on the DMK government to immediately halt the work to prevent Tamil Nadu from turning into a desert.

This urgent demand highlights the severity of the water situation in Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK is seeking immediate action from Chief Minister Stalin to protect the rights of the state and the livelihood of its farmers. It’s a call that emphasizes cooperation and strong leadership to ensure the welfare of the people. The situation will continue to be closely watched, as the resolution of this matter is crucial for the state and its farmers.
