Tempe Grupo Inditex, the Spain-based company behind the popular fashion brand Zara, is set to start production in West Bengal before Christmas this year, according to the state’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Banerjee made this announcement during her 12-day official trip to Spain, where she met with company officials to discuss the venture. The state government is offering 100 acres of concessional land and other forms of support to facilitate the company’s entry.

“An exciting development is on the horizon! Tempe Grupo Inditex (Zara) is expanding its operations. They are partnering with private entities to shift manufacturing to West Bengal,” Banerjee said. She expressed optimism that this new venture will significantly contribute to the growth, sustainability, and prosperity of the state.

The chief minister noted that the venture aligns well with West Bengal’s long-term goals. “During the Bengal Global Business Summit in 2019, a segment titled ‘Downstream Polymer and Plastic Industry’ was conceived, aligning with our collective vision,” she added.

In a related development, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Publishers & Booksellers Guild, which organizes the International Kolkata Book Fair, and the Madrid Book Fair. This partnership aims to promote and market books, disseminate information related to books, and foster bilateral cultural relations. Representatives from the Guild accompanied Banerjee to Spain for her official tour.

“The MoU will develop strong institutional relationships to establish a broader platform for book publishers on both sides,” the state government announced in a statement.

This venture marks a significant milestone for West Bengal, as it aims to attract more global businesses to invest in the state. Tempe Grupo Inditex’s decision to start production in West Bengal can be seen as a strong vote of confidence in the region’s potential for industrial growth and development. With the state government providing all necessary support, including land and infrastructural backing, this initiative is expected to have a ripple effect on the state’s economy, creating jobs and fostering economic progress.
