Rainfall Devastation: Houses Tumble in Shimla

Continued rains in Himachal Pradesh cause house collapses in Shimla, intensifying concerns.

New Delhi (Agency): Nature’s power can be both beautiful and destructive. Himachal Pradesh, a scenic state in India, is currently facing the latter. Continuous heavy rainfall has led to a series of unfortunate events, including the collapse of several houses in Shimla, the state’s capital.

On Tuesday, officials reported a significant incident in Krishna Nagar, Shimla. According to Aditya Negi, the Deputy Commissioner of Shimla, a hillside gave way, resulting in the collapse of around five to seven houses. Thankfully, as of now, there are no reports of people being trapped or stranded due to this event.

However, this is just one of many tragic episodes unfolding in Himachal Pradesh. The state has already seen a significant loss of life, with 55 people reported dead due to the consequences of the downpours. This includes incidents like landslides, cloudbursts, and roads becoming impassable.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu shared his concerns, stating that areas like Solan, Shimla, Mandi, and Hamirpur are the most affected. He was quoted saying, “Around 55 people have lost their lives in the state till now. The death toll might go up. Restoration work is being done on a war footing.” He also informed that major roads, including the Chandigarh-Shimla 4-lane highway, are now open.

To cope with the situation, aid and resources are essential. CM Sukhu mentioned his conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who assured full support. “I spoke to Amit Shah ji yesterday who has assured all help,” said Sukhu. He also highlighted the deployment of an Army helicopter in Shimla for emergency scenarios.

As the state grapples with the immediate challenges, a decision has been made to forego cultural celebrations for Independence Day. This is a testament to the seriousness of the situation.

Adding to the tales of devastation, CM Sukhu shed light on a particularly heartrending incident in the village of Jadon in the Solan district. A cloudburst led to the loss of seven members from a single family. Visibly moved, the Chief Minister said, “it was a heart-wrenching incident,” emphasizing the government’s commitment to stand with the victims and provide necessary support.

Another tragic episode took place in Shimla’s Summer Hill area, where a temple, following a cloudburst, collapsed. This resulted in the death of at least nine people, with several others feared trapped under the debris. Efforts to rescue them are ongoing.

Meanwhile, as rescue and relief operations progress, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of more heavy rainfall in parts of Himachal Pradesh and the neighboring state of Uttarakhand. Currently, both states are on “red alert,” although this is expected to shift to a lower “orange alert” soon.

While the rains continue and rescue efforts persist, the people of Himachal Pradesh remain hopeful. With collective determination, they aim to weather this storm and rebuild their homes and lives.
