New Delhi (Agency): In a significant step towards promoting environmental awareness and sustainability, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin launched the “Chief Minister’s Green Fellowship Programme” on Monday. This initiative is aimed at spreading awareness on climate change and aligning with other environmental goals, including the implementation of green initiatives across the state’s districts.

Under the program, 40 “green fellows” have been selected by the state-run Anna University’s Institute of Energy Studies, which is serving as the knowledge partner. The fellowship initiative also includes a program lead and four research associates.

These fellows will play a vital role in contributing to and influencing policy interventions related to environmental initiatives within district administrations. Their work will align with the state government’s environment and sustainable development goals and policies. Among the 40 appointees, 38 will focus on individual districts, while two will operate at the state level. The fellows, who will have a two-year tenure, will receive a stipend of Rs 60,000 per month.

An official release emphasized that the program is designed as a platform for young individuals committed to working in fields such as environmental protection, renewable energy, biodiversity, and sustainable development. The Department of Environment and Climate Change of the State government will act as the implementing agency for the Chief Minister’s Green Fellowship Programme.

Upon successful completion of the fellowship, the green fellows will be awarded the Post Graduate Diploma in Climate Change and Sustainability by Anna University. The primary role of the green fellows will be to support district administrations in the implementation of several missions, including the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, and Tamil Nadu Wetlands Mission.

Tamil Nadu, with its 38 districts, will have one green fellow assigned to each district, ensuring a comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship and sustainability across the state.

The Chief Minister’s Green Fellowship Programme represents a significant commitment by the Tamil Nadu government to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable practices. By involving young and dedicated individuals, the initiative seeks to foster a new generation of environmental leaders. The program’s holistic approach, focusing on various aspects of environmental protection and sustainability, positions Tamil Nadu as a leader in environmental advocacy and action. The active participation of the state’s educational institutions and government departments further strengthens this concerted effort to create a greener future for the region.
