Karnataka Government Launches ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ Scheme

The Karnataka government is set to launch the 'Gruha Lakshmi' scheme, offering monthly financial aid of Rs 2,000 to approximately 1.1 crore women heads of families.

New Delhi (Agency): The Congress government in Karnataka is fulfilling another key promise made before the elections. The ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ scheme will be launched tomorrow at a public event in Mysuru, offering a monthly aid of Rs 2,000 to about 1.1 crore women who are the heads of their families.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar attended a prayer ceremony today at the famous Chamundeshwari temple in Mysuru. AICC President M Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will also be present at the launch event.

Siddaramaiah informed reporters that the government has set aside Rs 17,500 crore for the ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ program for the current financial year. This scheme is one of five key “guarantees” made by the Congress party prior to the elections, which saw them defeating the BJP to form the government.

When asked if delivering these “guarantees” was a challenge, the Chief Minister was confident. “There should be political will. Our party and government have political will,” he stated. Despite opposition claims that the scheme could lead to financial troubles, Siddaramaiah insisted that the government has been successfully implementing the promises.

“It’s not a party function,” said Siddaramaiah, emphasizing that the event to launch the ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ scheme will be a government function. Kharge and Gandhi will attend as Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and as Lok Sabha member, respectively.

The government has already successfully implemented three of the five pre-election “guarantees.” These include ‘Shakti’, which aims to empower women; ‘Gruha Jyothi,’ focused on housing; and ‘Anna Bhagya,’ related to food security. The fifth planned scheme, ‘Yuva Nidhi,’ will provide an unemployment allowance to the youth of Karnataka.

The launch event is expected to gather about one lakh people, as per Siddaramaiah. The ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ scheme aims to alleviate financial strain for families led by women and is a step towards fulfilling the government’s promise to the people. This initiative represents another milestone in the Congress government’s commitment to social welfare and financial stability for women.
