Hostel Superintendent Suspended After Student’s Childbirth

Chhattisgarh Hostel Incident Leads to Superintendent's Suspension for Negligence.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency(Chhattisgarh): A shocking event unfolded in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district where a Class 12 student, residing in a government-run hostel, gave birth to a baby. This incident has led to the immediate suspension of the hostel’s superintendent due to alleged negligence and lack of awareness regarding the student’s pregnancy. The 20-year-old student, enrolled in a nearby school, was in a relationship for several years, a fact known to both families involved.

The hostel, part of a system of porta cabins designed to provide educational infrastructure in Naxal-affected areas, offers both schooling and residential facilities in some locations, while others serve exclusively as hostels. Students from these exclusive hostels attend schools in the vicinity for their education.

The incident came to light when the student, residing in a girls’ residential porta cabin in the Gangloor area, reported feeling unwell with headaches and uneasiness. She was subsequently admitted to a local hospital where she delivered a baby. The matter was investigated by district education authorities following the birth.

Bijapur District Education Officer (DEO) Baliram Baghel, upon visiting the hospital and residential facility, confirmed the student’s ongoing relationship and their families’ awareness of it. The student had participated in three Class 12 board examination papers before the event.

The superintendent of the porta cabin hostel, Anshu Minj, faced suspension after preliminary investigations suggested negligence in monitoring the health and well-being of the students under her care. Minj defended her position, noting a recent health department camp at the hostel for sickle cell anemia screening, during which no pregnancy was detected. She revealed that the student had previously eloped with her partner, information that came to her attention only after the incident. Further inquiries into the matter are ongoing, highlighting the challenges and responsibilities associated with student welfare in residential educational facilities.
