New Delhi (Agency): Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh has announced the state government’s plans to introduce a comprehensive policy aimed at fostering the growth of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations within the state. This initiative seeks to address accessibility, convenience, and employment opportunities in the burgeoning electric mobility sector.

During a meeting held in Shimla, Chief Minister Sukhu underlined the policy’s commitment to offer substantial incentives to private operators who are willing to establish EV charging stations. This includes a notable 50% subsidy to facilitate the setup of e-charging infrastructure. He emphasized that the state government’s efforts are geared towards developing a robust EV charging network while encouraging private-sector participation.

Sukhu stated, “The state government would bring an effective policy to develop electric charging stations for e-vehicles in the state. The policy would focus on various aspects including accessibility, convenience, and opening employment avenues. Private operators would also be roped in with a 50% subsidy for setting up e-charging stations.”

This proactive approach aims to drive private-sector investment in expanding Himachal Pradesh’s EV charging infrastructure, thereby accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing carbon emissions. The Chief Minister was apprised of the current status of existing and upcoming EV charging stations across the state. He reiterated the government’s determination to transform Himachal Pradesh into a role model for electric vehicle adoption and sustainable transportation practices.

In addition to expanding the EV charging network, the state government is actively working on developing six green corridors that will span National and State Highways, covering a total distance of 2,137 kilometers in the initial phase. Furthermore, the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) is progressively integrating electric buses into its fleet. Chief Minister Sukhu instructed HRTC to identify suitable routes for deploying these new electric vehicles.

The overarching vision of the government is to significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels by transitioning to electric public transport. This goal also underscores the significance of scientifically evaluating land suitability for infrastructure development.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Sukhu reviewed the progress of solar power projects and urged expedited land transfer procedures. He also advocated exploring green ammonia and biogas plants to bolster clean energy efforts. The Chief Minister called for a detailed project report for a pilot plant involving green hydrogen to be prepared by October 31, 2023. Green hydrogen is seen as a pivotal clean energy source for the future.

Additionally, Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted the successful completion of hydropower projects with a cumulative capacity of 1,000 MW in the fiscal year 2023-24, further underscoring the state’s unwavering commitment to advancing green and sustainable energy initiatives.

The collaborative approach of the Himachal Pradesh government, demonstrated through the participation of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh, Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister Ram Subhag Singh, Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, and other senior officials, exemplifies the state’s concerted efforts towards shaping a sustainable future for Himachal Pradesh.
