New Delhi (Agency): Seven Assam Police officers are facing a criminal case for allegedly demanding money, according to a top official. The case was registered at the CID police station in Guwahati. Among those charged are a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and two Sub-Inspectors (SI).

DGP GP Singh stated that the police headquarters had received a complaint in the first week of August regarding officers from Bajali district demanding money. Despite efforts to set a trap for these officers, they remained cautious, and the trap was not successful. Nonetheless, the DGP said the complaint seemed to be “prima facie true,” leading to the registration of a criminal case on August 31st.

The officers facing charges include Puskal Gogoi, DSP of Bajali district; Anup Jyoti Patiri, the officer in charge of Patacharkuchi police station; and Debajit Giri, who is in charge of Bhawanipur outpost under Patacharkuchi police station. Assistant SI Sasanka Das, Injamamul Hassan, Deepjoy Roy, and Nabir Ahmed are also among those accused. All the officers have been brought to the CID police station for “further lawful action.”

“Further lawful action is being taken. As always, we remain committed to relentless, ruthless action against corrupt practices,” DGP Singh added.

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has also commented on the case. He said that more action against police personnel is likely to happen by Friday evening. “Many more personnel will be closed to their reserve and transfer orders for many will be issued by evening. A special case has been registered at CID, and on the basis of it, arrests of police personnel could also happen,” he said.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the police must “change its character” and not be abusive towards the public. He also mentioned that if complaints about abusing the public prove to be correct, the DGP has full authority to take action against the involved officers.
