Kolkata (West Bengal): A SpiceJet flight (SG 670) operating from Mumbai to Kolkata made an emergency landing on Sunday night after one of its engines reportedly failed mid-air, officials at Kolkata Airport confirmed.
According to airport authorities, the flight landed safely, and all passengers and crew members were unharmed. The full emergency, which had been declared as a precautionary measure, was withdrawn at 11:38 pm following the aircraft’s safe touchdown.
This incident comes just days after several airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, issued advisories warning passengers about potential delays due to disruptions at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The delays were attributed to a technical glitch in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, which led to over 100 flight delays.
SpiceJet had earlier posted on X (formerly Twitter), alerting passengers that “due to ATC congestion at Delhi, all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights might get affected,” advising travelers to check flight status updates on the airline’s website.
In a similar incident on September 12, a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft operating from Kandla (Gujarat) to Mumbai made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) after an outer wheel was discovered on the runway following take-off. The airline confirmed that the aircraft landed safely at 3:51 pm, and all passengers disembarked normally.
As per the airline’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), the pilot in Sunday’s incident promptly requested an emergency landing after detecting the technical issue. SpiceJet has not yet issued an official statement regarding the cause of the engine failure.
