Sonitpur: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg is expected to file its chargesheet in court by December 8. The Chief Minister reiterated his firm belief that the singer’s death was “a case of murder.”
“Today, I am not saying Zubeen Garg’s death was an accident — it was a murder. We aim to submit the chargesheet in the Zubeen Garg murder case before December 17, but I’ve directed the SIT to complete it by December 8. We are ready,” CM Sarma stated.
He added that he had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday to ensure swift approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), as the incident occurred abroad. The approval is expected within the next few days.
“If any crime takes place in a foreign country, MHA approval is required before filing the chargesheet. I met Amit Shah yesterday to expedite the process. I believe in the next 3–4 days, the SIT will write to MHA, and we’ll get the clearance to submit the chargesheet by December 7, 8, or 9,” Sarma said.
During his interaction with the media, the Assam Chief Minister also launched a scathing attack on Congress MP and APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that he is “100 percent a Pakistani agent.”
“Gaurav Gogoi is a 100 percent Pakistani agent, and I stand by what I’m saying. Debabrata Saikia said he should file a case against me — I’ll be happy if he does. We’ll reveal more about the Gaurav Gogoi matter after the Zubeen Garg case chargesheet is submitted,” he asserted.
Sarma further announced that the Assam government will table a new bill to ban polygamy in the state on November 25, proposing seven years of rigorous imprisonment for offenders.
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most beloved singers, passed away in Singapore on September 19 in what was initially reported as a drowning incident. He had been in Singapore to attend the Northeast India Festival.
