New Delhi: BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain on Monday sharply criticised Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Madani for his recent remarks in Bhopal, accusing him of attempting to provoke and mislead Indian Muslims.
Reacting to Madani’s statement that “jihad will take place wherever there is oppression,” Hussain said such comments were “misleading and dangerous,” questioning where oppression existed in India. He alleged that Madani was trying to create distrust and unrest within the Muslim community.
“Do not conspire to provoke Muslims,” Hussain said, accusing the cleric of pushing the community toward confrontation. He asserted that Muslims in India enjoy rights and freedoms unmatched anywhere else. “Muslims cannot find a better country than India, a better friend than a Hindu, a better Constitution, or a better leader than Modi,” he claimed, adding that Indian Muslims reject calls for “jihad.”
Hussain also condemned Madani’s criticism of the Supreme Court. Madani had said the court did not deserve to be called “supreme” unless it upheld the Constitution, citing verdicts on the Babri Masjid dispute, triple talaq, and other issues as evidence of alleged governmental influence over the judiciary. Hussain called these remarks “unfortunate and condemnable.”
Speaking at the National Governing Body meeting of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind in Bhopal, Madani had raised concerns about judicial independence, minority rights, mob lynchings, bulldozer demolitions, and the seizure of Waqf properties. He also criticised anti-conversion laws and argued that communities must resist pressure and face challenges boldly. Referring to Vande Mataram, he said that only a “living community” stands up to such challenges.
Hussain dismissed these comments as attempts to spread fear, asserting that calls for “jihad” had no place in India.
