New Delhi, December 1: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain petitions seeking an extension of the six-month deadline for registering Waqf properties under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
A bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih observed that applicants have an available remedy before the Waqf Tribunal, which can consider requests for relief under the new Act. “Since a remedy is available before the Waqf Tribunal, the applicants may approach it by December 6, which we are informed is the last date for registration,” the bench said.
Counsel for the petitioners argued that the difficulties involved not just the registration of properties on the UMEED portal but also the digitisation process. They expressed concern that by the time the Tribunal hears their applications, the December 6 deadline would have lapsed.
The Supreme Court, however, maintained that those facing genuine technical or procedural challenges could seek an extension directly from the Tribunal. “If the portal freezes, you cannot be held responsible. If the Tribunal allows your plea, your six-month period will be counted and your application considered. You do not need our permission. If further difficulty arises, you may apply to us,” the Court stated.
