Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh): The father of Indian cricketer Rinku Singh passed away on Friday morning at Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida, according to the hospital’s PRO. He had been battling stage-four cancer and was undergoing treatment at the facility.
Rinku had briefly returned home from India’s squad in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after his father’s condition worsened following India’s first Super 8 fixture against the South Africa national cricket team.
After spending time with his family, he rejoined the Indian squad in Chennai ahead of the clash against the Zimbabwe national cricket team. However, he did not feature in the playing XI for that match, as the team opted for Sanju Samson to open alongside Abhishek Sharma.
Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh expressed his condolences in a post on X, offering prayers for strength and courage to Rinku and his family during the difficult time.
On the field, Rinku has had limited opportunities in the tournament, often coming in to bat with few deliveries remaining. He has scored 24 runs in five innings so far, remaining unbeaten twice, with a highest score of 11. In 10 T20Is this year, he has amassed 115 runs in eight innings at an average of 28.75 and a strike rate of 132.18, with a best of 44.
India will now travel to Kolkata for their final Super 8 clash against the West Indies cricket team on Sunday. The winner of the match will join South Africa in qualifying for the semi-finals from Group 1.
