Amritsar: In a significant development, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Tuesday raided the residence of senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in Amritsar and took him in for questioning. The early morning operation was conducted in connection with an ongoing investigation, though officials have not disclosed specific case details yet.
The action sparked a political stir across the state, with SAD calling the move “politically motivated”. However, leaders from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were quick to deny the allegation, stating that there is “no political vendetta” behind the operation.
“Law is taking its course. No one is above investigation. This is not vendetta politics,” an AAP spokesperson said in Chandigarh.
Majithia, a prominent face of the SAD and brother-in-law of party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, has been under scrutiny in several high-profile cases in the past, including drug-related allegations.
The SAD leadership condemned the raid, calling it an “abuse of power” and a “desperate diversion from AAP’s governance failures”. Party workers gathered outside Majithia’s residence in protest as the news spread.
The Vigilance Bureau is expected to release a formal statement later in the day detailing the reasons behind the raid and the scope of the questioning.
This development marks yet another flashpoint in Punjab’s volatile political landscape as the state heads into a period of heightened political activity ahead of key civic and party elections.
