Budgam (Jammu and Kashmir): Shia Muslims staged protests in Budgam on Sunday condemning the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in alleged strikes carried out by the United States and Israel.
Similar demonstrations were held in Srinagar, where hundreds of members of the Shia community gathered to express solidarity with Iran and denounce the attack. Protesters raised slogans against the US and Israel while carrying portraits of Khamenei and banners in support of Iran.
One protester described the gathering as a peaceful mourning procession. Black flags, images of the Iranian leader, and traditional Nauha chants were seen during the demonstrations in Srinagar.
According to Iranian state media, Iran is observing 40 days of public mourning following Khamenei’s death. In Shia Islam, the 40th day after death, known as Arba’een, holds significant religious importance.
The reported death followed strikes attributed to the US and Israel under operations referred to as “Epic Fury” and “Lion’s Roar.” Iran’s Supreme Leader’s office has declared a national mourning period, with flags at half-mast and public ceremonies planned across the country.
Khamenei, who succeeded Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, led Iran for over three decades. Authorities in Iran have heightened security, particularly in major cities such as Tehran, amid concerns over unrest.
Attention is now focused on the process of selecting his successor, a decision expected to shape Iran’s political direction in the years ahead.
