Review Overview

The Aryavarth Express New Delhi, February 4:
President’s Rule in Manipur has been revoked with immediate effect, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced on Tuesday. The decision was formalised through a notification issued by the President of India, restoring the constitutional process of governance in the northeastern state after nearly a year of central rule.

According to the notification, the earlier proclamation under Article 356 of the Constitution, which placed Manipur under President’s Rule, has been withdrawn. With this move, the administration of the state will no longer be carried out in the name of the President, paving the way for the formation of an elected government.

President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, 2025, following political instability in the state after the resignation of the then Chief Minister amid prolonged ethnic tensions and law-and-order challenges. The inability of political parties to form a stable government at that time led to the suspension of the state’s legislative assembly and the assumption of control by the Centre.

The revocation of President’s Rule marks a significant political development and signals a return to democratic governance in Manipur. Soon after the announcement, leaders of the ruling alliance at the Centre staked their claim before the Governor to form the new state government.

Sources said that the process of government formation has been set in motion, with the swearing-in of the new Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers expected shortly. Security and administrative arrangements are also being reviewed to ensure a smooth transition of power.

The move is being seen as an important step towards political normalcy in the state, which has witnessed months of unrest and administrative challenges. The Centre has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and development in Manipur as the elected government resumes charge.

Further details regarding the composition of the new government and the schedule for the legislative assembly are expected to be announced soon.
