President and Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, Droupadi Murmu, on Wednesday paid tribute to India’s ex-servicemen on the occasion of the 10th Armed Forces Veterans’ Day, lauding their valour, dedication and sacrifice.
In a message shared on X, the President said that the unwavering courage of veterans continues to inspire every Indian. She noted that occasions such as Veterans’ Day and Armed Forces Flag Day are not only meant to honour brave soldiers but also to extend meaningful support to them. Expressing confidence in their enduring commitment, she said veterans would continue to serve the nation with the same dedication even after retirement.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed deep gratitude to both serving personnel and veterans. In his tribute, he said their lives, devoted to courage, honour and service before self, form the living shield of the nation’s borders and preserve the soul of the Republic. He reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to the dignity, welfare and well-being of veterans, serving personnel and their families.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi extended warm greetings to veterans and their families, describing retired personnel as enduring symbols of courage, professionalism and selfless service. He said Veterans’ Day is not merely a commemorative event but a tribute to a lifetime of dedication and sacrifice. Admiral Tripathi assured veterans that the Navy and sister services remain fully committed to their welfare and dignity, emphasising that their bond with the armed forces continues even after retirement.
The Indian Army also paid homage to ex-servicemen, with Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi extending best wishes to veterans and their families. In a post, the Army highlighted the invaluable contributions of ex-servicemen to nation-building, noting that their loyalty, discipline and selfless service inspire future generations. It added that veterans continue to play a vital role in promoting national unity, guiding youth and contributing to India’s development.
Armed Forces Veterans’ Day is observed every year on January 14 to mark the birth anniversary of Late Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. Field Marshal Cariappa, who retired on this day in 1953, led Indian forces during the 1947 war and laid the foundation for a lasting legacy of discipline, service and patriotism, according to the Ministry of Defence.
