Turbulence in Karnataka Congress Over Election Tickets

Five Karnataka Congress members threaten resignation over ticket distribution concerns, highlighting internal conflicts regarding candidate selection.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency(Karnataka): In a recent display of discord within the Congress party in Karnataka, five legislators have openly expressed their discontent and have threatened to resign. Their grievances stem from the potential nomination of Chikka Peddanna, a relative of senior party leader and Minister K H Muniyappa, to contest from Kolar in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. This move has ignited a conflict within the party, which has yet to finalize its candidate for the constituency, currently under BJP control. The dissenters argue against Peddanna’s candidature, advocating instead for representation from a different caste segment.

The heart of the controversy lies within the Congress party’s Kolar district factions. Legislators Kothur G Manjunath, K Y Nanjegowda, MC Sudhakar, and MLCs Anil Kumar and Naseer Ahmed, all align against Peddanna’s nomination, favoring a candidate from an alternative caste group. This dispute highlights ongoing tensions and rivalry for dominance in the district, particularly between groups led by Muniyappa and former assembly speaker K R Ramesh Kumar.

Amidst these internal strains, the involved legislators have taken significant steps to voice their objections. They planned to meet with legislative authorities to tender their resignations but have opted to pause their actions following directives from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and party state President D K Shivakumar. High-level discussions are anticipated to resolve these issues upon the return of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister from their tours.

Urban Development Minister B S Suresha has been actively engaged in mediation efforts, conveying leadership’s assurances to the dissenting members. The party leadership is keen on an amicable resolution, emphasizing the importance of unity and discipline within the ranks.
