Agency(Haryana): Savitri Jindal, the former Haryana minister, and her daughter have made a significant shift in their political allegiance by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Hisar, Haryana. This change comes shortly after her son, industrialist Naveen Jindal, also transitioned to the BJP.

The 84-year-old, previously affiliated with the Congress, announced her departure and subsequent joining of the BJP through a social media post. She expressed her deep connection to the people of Hisar, where she served as an MLA for a decade and contributed to the state as a minister. Forbes India recently recognized her as the wealthiest woman in the country, with a net worth of USD 29.1 billion.

Her decision to switch parties was made public in the presence of Haryana’s Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, and other prominent BJP leaders. Chief Minister Saini welcomed her and her daughter to the “BJP family” via a social media post, highlighting her roles as a former minister, social worker, and influential figure in Haryana’s political landscape.

Savitri Jindal’s move to the BJP marks a departure from her previous political endeavors, including a ministerial position in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress government. In the 2014 elections, she was defeated by the BJP’s Kamal Gupta in Hisar, who is currently a minister in Saini’s government.

Her son, Naveen Jindal, has previously represented Kurukshetra in the Lok Sabha as a Congress MP from 2004 to 2014. He recently joined the BJP and has been announced as its candidate from Kurukshetra.

Upon joining the BJP, Savitri Jindal committed to contributing towards forming a strong government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. She expressed admiration for Modi’s vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047 and reflected on her late husband, O P Jindal’s political journey, which was driven by a commitment to uplift the economically weaker sections of society.

The BJP leadership praised the development work accomplished under the “double-engine” government over the past decade. The party’s presence was further solidified with the inauguration of the election office for Ranjit Singh Chautala, the BJP candidate from Hisar.

With the Lok Sabha elections approaching, this move is seen as a significant political development in Haryana, where polling for 10 seats is scheduled for the sixth phase on May 25.
