Agency (New Delhi): On Monday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra spoke out in Rae Bareli, criticizing the present government for labeling national icons like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru as “traitors”. She condemned the harsh rhetoric used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his campaign.

During her address to party supporters in the Rae Bareli constituency, Gandhi expressed astonishment that any government would denigrate such pivotal figures in India’s independence and suggest constitutional changes contingent on electoral victory. “They could not have envisioned a government attempting to undermine our citizens,” she remarked.

Gandhi recalled historical protests involving her ancestors, noting the arrests of Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru in Rae Bareli, which marked the beginning of their political struggles in the region. She portrayed Rae Bareli’s electoral history as a battle between democratic values and oppressive politics, praising the electorate’s consistent support for democratic ideals.

Highlighting her family’s deep connections with Rae Bareli, Gandhi spoke emotionally about the sacrifices made by both her family and the local populace. “This land, enriched with my family’s blood, holds the sacrifices of your forebears. Today, we continue to fight for the dignity and rights of our people,” she stated.

In her speech, Gandhi also praised Congress’ Amethi candidate Kishori Lal Sharma, acknowledging his guidance in her political campaigning. She expressed confidence in the victory of her “elder brother”, Rahul Gandhi, and Sharma in the upcoming elections.

The Gandhi family has a longstanding association with Rae Bareli, with Sonia Gandhi representing the constituency for two decades. Priyanka Gandhi reflected on how Indira Gandhi, after a rare defeat in Rae Bareli, learned from the experience and returned stronger to win subsequent elections.

As Rae Bareli and Amethi prepare for the polls on May 20, Priyanka Gandhi’s visit aims to reinforce the Gandhis’ commitment to uphold the democratic legacy and the values their ancestors fought for.
