Agency(West Bengal): In a strong political statement during an election rally in Assam, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared that the INDIA opposition bloc would abolish the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) if they are voted into power at the Centre. Banerjee, supporting four Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidates, criticized the BJP’s governance, claiming it has transformed the country into a “detention camp” and endangered democratic principles.

Banerjee expressed concerns over the future of democracy in India, suggesting that a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi could lead to the abolition of democratic elections. “They (BJP) made the entire country a detention camp… I have never seen such a dangerous election in my life,” she remarked.

Further emphasizing her party’s inclusive stance, Banerjee stated, “TMC loves all religions and does not want people to be divided on religious lines.” She reiterated her commitment to repealing what she described as discriminatory laws, including the potential implementation of a Uniform Civil Code, should the INDIA bloc be successful in the upcoming elections.

In her speech, Banerjee also highlighted her party’s broader electoral ambitions in Assam, announcing plans to contest all 126 assembly seats in the 2026 state elections. “This is just a trailer and the final is yet to come. I will come again,” she concluded, signaling a sustained campaign effort in the region.
